TMS FOR VETERANS
Veterans face a heightened risk of mental health disorders. In 2008, Veterans Affairs estimated 1 in 3 veterans visiting primary care physicians experienced some symptoms of depression, and 1 in 5 reported severe depressive symptoms.
Transcranial Magnetic Stimulation (TMS) is an FDA-approved, TRICARE Insurance-covered, non-invasive, and effective procedure that uses uses magnetic fields to stimulate brain nerve cells, improving depression symptoms.
Recent studies highlight the effectiveness of TMS for veterans, particularly in treating depression, PTSD, and tinnitus, conditions prevalent among veterans due to the traumatic experiences faced during active duty.
TMS has been shown to significantly alleviate the symptoms of these disorders, helping veterans achieve a better quality of life.

TRANSCRANIAL MAGNETIC STIMULATION (TMS)
TMS is an FDA-approved, medication-free, non-invasive treatment with higher remission rates than antidepressants and psychotherapy.
How does TMS work?
Transcranial Magnetic Stimulation (TMS) is a safe, effective technological breakthrough that sends pulses of magnetic energy (similar to an MRI machine) to stimulate specific areas of the brain that are underactive and play a crucial role in regulating your emotional well-being.
What’s it like?
TMS therapy is a non-invasive procedure that does not involve sedation or anesthesia. Our experts will deliver precise magnetic pulses to targeted areas of your brain. The sessions are safe and well-tolerated with minimal (and temporary) side effects.
Is it right for me?
TMS is a suitable treatment for most people, especially those who haven’t responded to medication and other therapies. Before getting started, our clinicians will confirm your eligibility.
Does TMS treat more than depression?
Yes, TMS is highly effective and proven to treat major depressive disorder, anxiety, OCD, migraines, chronic pain, PTSD, bipolar disorder, ADHD and smoking cessation, among others.

Russ gained his expertise in TMS, EEG, and MRI at Stanford, where he earned his PhD in Bioengineering. He has performed hundreds of TMS sessions with more than a decade of experience in neuromodulation, neuroimaging, and clinical trials research. After graduating from West Point, he served as a combined armor-infantry platoon leader in Iraq’s Diyala River Valley. His battalion received the Valorous Unit Award for extraordinary heroism over their 14 month deployment in the “Triangle of Death.” After Iraq, Russ served as a casualty officer and his experiences in that role motivated his drive to improve the care we provide Gold Star Families. He is an assistant professor of psychiatry at the University of Texas Southwestern Medical Center where he researches mood disorders as well as addiction. Russ also instructs medical students and residents in TMS protocols.
PTSD
Post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) is a psychiatric condition triggered by trauma and characterized by symptoms such as intrusive thoughts, avoidance behaviors, negative changes in mood and cognition, and heightened arousal following a traumatic event. Traumatic events are those that are terrifying, shocking, or extremely stressful to an individual.
Many veterans have encountered experiences that can lead to the development of PTSD. The prevalence of PTSD among returning service members varies widely across different wars and eras. A 2013 study found 13.5% of 60,000 Iraq and Afghanistan veterans, both deployed and non-deployed, screened positive for PTSD. Although the rates differ for each conflict, PTSD remains one of the most common disorders among veterans.

You may feel a tapping sensation on your scalp, which is produced by the magnetic pulses being delivered to your brain. Some individuals describe it as a gentle knocking or fluttering feeling. The intensity of these sensations can vary from person to person, but they are generally mild and do not cause significant discomfort. Most people are able to adjust to the sensations after a few sessions.
